English proficiency crucial to progress, says Dr Mahathir

Mastering the English language is crucial to progress, especially in the fields of science and mathematics, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“In this age, the English language is the international language, lingua franca, and much of the knowledge comes to us in the English language,” said the former prime minister at the SM Sains Muar (Samura) reunion dinner at the Palace of the Golden Horses hotel on Saturday.

“If we only master Bahasa Melayu we cannot actively move forward in the world, especially in the economic world,” he said.

Dr Mahathir added that there are new discoveries every day in science and technology by researchers, and in order not to fall behind it is necessary to have a good command of the English language.

“It is not that I am setting aside the national language but it is a fact that in order to master the fields of science and mathematics we must master the English language,” he said.

He said the ultimate aim should be to gain knowledge and as the world is speaking in English, the language should be mastered.

Dr Mahathir added that it is not difficult to pick up the language and that for him, it was learned by reading thousands of English storybooks from the time he was young.

Also present at the dinner was his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and Samura alumni president Dr Abdul Razak Ahmad.

Medical grads quit as doctors due to poor English proficiency, says report

Some 1,000 medical graduates have stopped becoming doctors, with their poor command of English being a main factor, The Star reported.

Quoting the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Malacca chapter president Dr M. Nachiappan, the daily said medical graduates were also unable to cope with other job pressures.

“Despite having completed their housemanship last year, they are no longer keen to be doctors.

“The main reason was poor grasp of English. This is not good for the medical fraternity and does not augur well for the nation if stakeholders do not execute some plans to improve the standard of English,” he was quoted as saying.

Other factors include lack of interest in basic medical training, poor communication skills with patients and frustration over working conditions.

Expressing worry, Dr Nachiappan said lack of English proficiency will handicap Malaysian medical students from keeping up with their counterparts from other countries.

“There must be an urgency to improve the grasp of the language at the primary level. Otherwise, the quality of doctors will go downhill,” the Malacca Manipal Medical College deputy dean told The Star.

Medical schools were also having difficulty producing medical graduates due to poor command of English, he said.

“The quality of our students is compromised due to their inabilities to communicate in English,” the report quoted him as saying, adding that most reference books on medicine as well as lectures were delivered in English.

The Malaysian Insider had reported in June last year that employers were becoming increasingly dismayed by Malaysia's "generation Y" job seekers, due to their poor command of the English language and communication skills.

A survey by the Malaysian Employers Federation a few years ago found that 60% of them identified low English proficiency as the main problem with young recruits.

A similar survey conducted in September 2013 by online recruitment agency JobStreet.com found that 55% of participating senior managers and companies said poor command of the English language was the main reason for unemployment among undergraduates.

School leavers might have SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) English grades of A and B, but could not even hold a conversation in English, MEF executive director Datuk Shamsudin Bardan had told The Malaysian Insider. – November 9, 2015.

Really. Mastering English is of utmost importance. Having an excellent command of the English language enables one to be a 'global citizen' in that one can work in many different countries and avoid 'losing face' as well as understand others very well when communicating/ interacting with others from different countries and backgrounds.

Under Surveillance

I was hurrying along, running some errands at C Mall when I came across a peculiar notice. A very baffling and amusing notice. 

Next to a display of portable vacuum cleaners was a handwritten sign that read:
PROMISES UNDER CCTV SURVEILLANCE.

I thought, "My eyes... something is wrong with them. Isn't it supposed to be 'Premises' instead of 'Promises'? Maybe the handwriting made the 'e' look like an 'o'..." 

I went to take a closer look to examine what I had read.

Ah yes, I have learnt something new yet again. A Single Letter can change the entire meaning of the word and sentence. Yes. It was definitely "PROMISES UNDER CCTV SURVEILLANCE". 

Wow, we really have to be careful about making promises. 

I'M a Fan of Kang Gary :)

Basically,
I just wanted to rave about Kang Gary! He's my favourite Running Man member. (Least favourite is Ji Suk Jin who borders on being hateful and is just plain annoying.)

I can't get why the other members keep saying that he is ugly. Granted, he isn't one of the good-lookers and 'visuals' of the K-pop industry but he is not ugly. He isn't handsome and drop-dead gorgeous kinda pretty boy like but he's got his own charm and swag! :)

He's cool when it comes to the games that they play and with different situations. He badass in a cute way. He doesn't make betraying others a main focus for him and that's what I like. I can't stand the bunch of betrayers though they add to the entertainment value. 

He has a different viewpoint from others at times and it's refreshing. For example, he decided to just sleep and rest instead of struggling to break out of prison (for one of the Running Man episodes). He's just cool! 

Nevertheless, he showed his intense passion and fervor when he desperately wanted to get out of the no-man's land in one of the episodes where they 'pranked' him - TruGary Show. He was competitive for all the right reasons and showed that he had his priorities in the right places. It was cool of him to just say, "Oh all right then. My album will have nine songs instead of ten." Of course it wasn't all right but he was the cool guy and I believe that he would have done something about the last song that he couldn't get into the album if he was really stuck on the island then. 

Kang Gary is awesome and impressive. He has skills, wit, agility, talent (which I am a total sucker for) resourcefulness, competitiveness and charm. He is gentlemanly and hilarious. Who can forget 'Peaceful Gary'?

All I Wanted Was A Bit Of Cake

Well. All I wanted was a bit of cake.

Was out having dinner and all I wanted to end the meal with was a bit of cake.

"What cakes do you have?" I asked the waiter.

"Hold on, let me get you the cake platter," he responded.

Away he went and back he came. With slices of tantalizing cake. 

"This is..." I ventured, pointing at a slice with white cream.

"Raspberry shortcake," he replied. 

"Ah! Raspberry and not strawberry?"

"Yes. Raspberry!" 

"Oh... Then, no. I am allergic to raspberry."

Keeping up with the good service, the waiter offered, "How about this one? Tiramisu." 

"Can't take coffee..." I answered. 

"How about this one with lemon?"

"Lemon? No... Am afraid of sour stuff."

"Carrot cake?" he tried again. The smile was fading.

"Nope. I don't eat carrot cake..." I muttered, defeated. 

He went away with the plate of cakes and related the whole incident to his co-worker almost within my earshot.

"Allergic... raspberry... can't take coffee..." he murmured. 

I could imagine him rolling his eyes in disbelief and bewilderment. 

Yes. Yes. All I Wanted Was A Bit Of Cake.
