As I have always Emphasized to My Students - English is Important because it's the LINGUA FRANCA!

English is a BUSINESS LANGUAGE!
Master English to Succeed in Your Endeavours! :) :)

English proficiency crucial to progress, says Dr Mahathir

KUALA LUMPUR:
Mastering the English language is crucial to progress, especially in the fields of science and mathematics, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“In this age, the English language is the international language, lingua franca, and much of the knowledge comes to us in the English language,” said the former prime minister at the SM Sains Muar (Samura) reunion dinner at the Palace of the Golden Horses hotel on Saturday.
“If we only master Bahasa Melayu we cannot actively move forward in the world, especially in the economic world,” he said.
Dr Mahathir added that there are new discoveries every day in science and technology by researchers, and in order not to fall behind it is necessary to have a good command of the English language.
“It is not that I am setting aside the national language but it is a fact that in order to master the fields of science and mathematics we must master the English language,” he said.
He said the ultimate aim should be to gain knowledge and as the world is speaking in English, the language should be mastered.
Dr Mahathir added that it is not difficult to pick up the language and that for him, it was learned by reading thousands of English storybooks from the time he was young.
Also present at the dinner was his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and Samura alumni president Dr Abdul Razak Ahmad.

Once Again: Excellence and Mastery of English is of Paramount Importance. #reallife #factoflife

Medical grads quit as doctors due to poor English proficiency, says report

Some 1,000 medical graduates have stopped becoming doctors, with their poor command of English being a main factor, The Star reported.
Quoting the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Malacca chapter president Dr M. Nachiappan, the daily said medical graduates were also unable to cope with other job pressures.
“Despite having completed their housemanship last year, they are no longer keen to be doctors.
The main reason was poor grasp of English. This is not good for the medical fraternity and does not augur well for the nation if stakeholders do not execute some plans to improve the standard of English,” he was quoted as saying.
Other factors include lack of interest in basic medical training, poor communication skills with patients and frustration over working conditions.
Expressing worry, Dr Nachiappan said lack of English proficiency will handicap Malaysian medical students from keeping up with their counterparts from other countries.
“There must be an urgency to improve the grasp of the language at the primary level. Otherwise, the quality of doctors will go downhill,” the Malacca Manipal Medical College deputy dean told The Star.
Medical schools were also having difficulty producing medical graduates due to poor command of English, he said.
“The quality of our students is compromised due to their inabilities to communicate in English,” the report quoted him as saying, adding that most reference books on medicine as well as lectures were delivered in English.
The Malaysian Insider had reported in June last year that employers were becoming increasingly dismayed by Malaysia's "generation Y" job seekers, due to their poor command of the English language and communication skills.
A survey by the Malaysian Employers Federation a few years ago found that 60% of them identified low English proficiency as the main problem with young recruits.
A similar survey conducted in September 2013 by online recruitment agency JobStreet.com found that 55% of participating senior managers and companies said poor command of the English language was the main reason for unemployment among undergraduates.

School leavers might have SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) English grades of A and B, but could not even hold a conversation in English, MEF executive director Datuk Shamsudin Bardan had told The Malaysian Insider. – November 9, 2015.

Really. Mastering English is of utmost importance. Having an excellent command of the English language enables one to be a 'global citizen' in that one can work in many different countries and avoid 'losing face' as well as understand others very well when communicating/ interacting with others from different countries and backgrounds.

Under Surveillance

I was hurrying along, running some errands at C Mall when I came across a peculiar notice. A very baffling and amusing notice.

Next to a display of portable vacuum cleaners was a handwritten sign that read:
PROMISES UNDER CCTV SURVEILLANCE.

I thought, "My eyes... something is wrong with them. Isn't it supposed to be 'Premises' instead of 'Promises'? Maybe the handwriting made the 'e' look like an 'o'..."

I went to take a closer look to examine what I had read.

Ah yes, I have learnt something new yet again. A Single Letter can change the entire meaning of the word and sentence. Yes. It was definitely "PROMISES UNDER CCTV SURVEILLANCE".

Wow, we really have to be careful about making promises.

I'M a Fan of Kang Gary :)

Basically,
I just wanted to rave about Kang Gary! He's my favourite Running Man member. (Least favourite is Ji Suk Jin who borders on being hateful and is just plain annoying.)

I can't get why the other members keep saying that he is ugly. Granted, he isn't one of the good-lookers and 'visuals' of the K-pop industry but he is not ugly. He isn't handsome and drop-dead gorgeous kinda pretty boy like but he's got his own charm and swag! :)

He's cool when it comes to the games that they play and with different situations. He badass in a cute way. He doesn't make betraying others a main focus for him and that's what I like. I can't stand the bunch of betrayers though they add to the entertainment value.

He has a different viewpoint from others at times and it's refreshing. For example, he decided to just sleep and rest instead of struggling to break out of prison (for one of the Running Man episodes). He's just cool!

Nevertheless, he showed his intense passion and fervor when he desperately wanted to get out of the no-man's land in one of the episodes where they 'pranked' him - TruGary Show. He was competitive for all the right reasons and showed that he had his priorities in the right places. It was cool of him to just say, "Oh all right then. My album will have nine songs instead of ten." Of course it wasn't all right but he was the cool guy and I believe that he would have done something about the last song that he couldn't get into the album if he was really stuck on the island then.

Kang Gary is awesome and impressive. He has skills, wit, agility, talent (which I am a total sucker for) resourcefulness, competitiveness and charm. He is gentlemanly and hilarious. Who can forget 'Peaceful Gary'?

Woo Hoo! 3 Cheers for Kang Gary! :) :) :)

All I Wanted Was A Bit Of Cake

Well. All I wanted was a bit of cake.

Was out having dinner and all I wanted to end the meal with was a bit of cake.

"What cakes do you have?" I asked the waiter.

"Hold on, let me get you the cake platter," he responded.

Away he went and back he came. With slices of tantalizing cake.

"This is..." I ventured, pointing at a slice with white cream.

"Raspberry shortcake," he replied.

"Ah! Raspberry and not strawberry?"

"Yes. Raspberry!"

"Oh... Then, no. I am allergic to raspberry."

Keeping up with the good service, the waiter offered, "How about this one? Tiramisu."

"Can't take coffee..." I answered.

"How about this one with lemon?"

"Lemon? No... Am afraid of sour stuff."

"Carrot cake?" he tried again. The smile was fading.

"Nope. I don't eat carrot cake..." I muttered, defeated.

He went away with the plate of cakes and related the whole incident to his co-worker almost within my earshot.

"Allergic... raspberry... can't take coffee..." he murmured.

I could imagine him rolling his eyes in disbelief and bewilderment.

Yes. Yes. All I Wanted Was A Bit Of Cake.

Unable to Forget. Forever ingrained.

Stumbled upon random articles found on a particular website. Let's call it MS. Found some articles about Mr Lee Kuan Yew and reading them brought tears to my eyes once again. The loss is profound. Singapore has lost it's compass and beacon.

I am inspired by Mr Lee to be a 'prouder Singaporean' - proud of my homeland, the one that he fought so hard for.

I am inspired by Mr Lee to be more outspoken and to do what is right, not what is popular.

Thank you is not enough to show gratitude and affection for the founding father of Singapore but yes, Thank You Again and Again and Again.

I hope to make you proud of SG60, SG70, SG80...

Julius Caesar (not) and Lord of the Flies (not) ... OMG!

Received the following in an email from XXX (will not be revealed for the sake of privacy)...

Students are doing these books for English Literature:
Books - Lord of The Files & Julies Ceaser.

Which made me WONDER and THINK. REALLY? Are they REALLY DOING SUCH BOOKS? WHO ARE THE AUTHORS?

Lord of the FILES? OMG! What is this story going to be about? LORD OF THE FILES who perhaps resides in a bookstore and is a file fanatic?

And, Julies Ceaser? WHO?!?! What a TEASER!!! WHO IS THIS?!?

Well... Such is the IMPORTANCE OF SPELLING! :) :) :)

I believe that XXX was referring to LORD OF THE FLIES?!

Hyuna ahhh - OMG - RED!

There is something about the colour RED.

What exactly? Illusive? Symbolic? Creative? Sensory? Stimulative?

RED by Hyuna is just  -- OMG so OTT that I CAN'T EVEN.

There is so much going on in this MV! Monkeys? Egyptian princess? Full on gyrating?! Giant lipstick?! Massive banana (to fit in with monkeys)?! Hyuna on an Enormous Red Lip with Glitter! OMG!

But! But! But!

I Cannot Take My Eyes Off Her! Hyuna's RED. Oh hell yeah, HYUNA'S RED!

She's so seriously FULL ON SEX-C that I Can't Even... I Mean. Oh yeah, Hyuna's RED. Totally Captivated by almost nonsense. Well, SEX-C-NESS Sells. It so does.

(Contrast with Taylor Swift's RED!) Seriously. What is up with RED? :) :) :)

An Inspiration to both Employees and Employers!

My work is important to me and being able to work till I choose not too (if all's well) is important to me too. In the world where age discrimination is rampant and youth is prized, it is gratifying and encouraging to see that McDonald's (featured here) recognises an excellent worker and continues to keep her around.

It is also inspiring to see Cynthia Sebastian contributing to society despite her age. In fact, her age can be seen as a plus-point in that she has all that life experiences and wisdom to share with those who are younger than her - regardless if they are her co-workers or the customers. Keeping herself meaningfully occupied is great! I hope to continue being useful well into my 60s and 70s. :) :)

Meet Cynthia Sebastian, the 74-year-old McDonald’s waitress who doesn’t believe in retirement

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/meet-cynthia-sebastian-74-old-mcdonald-waitress-doesn-224500894.html

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — Although in her 70s, Cynthia Sebastian still cuts a lean, trim figure.
Her shock of raven-black hair, sharp wit and bubbly personality is uncommon for a person of her advanced years. Only the skin on her hands, stretched taut over white knuckles and wrinkled from three decades of waiting on tables, betrays Sebastian’s picture of youth.
At a time when reports citing alarming statistics say Malaysia’s retirees may one day face poverty, Sebastian’s story is one of inspiration, especially to the country’s unemployed elderly.
Gutsy and full of gumption, Sebastian has been for the past 32 years pulling seven-hour shifts and six-day weeks as part of McDonald’s waitstaff, making her one of its longest-serving employees to date.Unlike most of the fast food chain’s employees, the experienced septuagenarian does it all – she cleans tables, takes orders and even plays the role of customer service officer and guidance counsellor, duties she gladly took upon herself.
Often, Sebastian can be seen opening doors to welcome customers and chatting them up at their tables. She even offers advice on crucial life events like marriage to those who seek her out.
Retirement not an option
“Retirement? I don’t think of it. I just can’t sit at home. I get bored!” she told Malay Mail Online in a recent interview at the Mutiara Damansara McDonald’s outlet where she currently serves.
“I will go on working until I am truly unable to do it any longer. I like this job,” she added with a smile.Independent woman
To Sebastian, every retiree and senior citizen should make sure they are financially independent and remain in the workforce for as long as they are physically able.
The grandmother of seven said she doesn’t believe in being anyone’s dependent, not even her own children’s.
“It’s good to not depend on children. Be independent as much as you can as kids will have their own lives and their own children to educate... like it or not, it’s a cycle.
“Just make sure you give your children a good education so they can be independent. That’s the most important thing,” she said.
Sebastian, the wife of former anti-graft officer Joseph Sebastian who passed away last year, had started her married life as a housewife, devoted only to raising her children and keeping the household in order.
But in 1983, one year after McDonald’s first opened its doors in Malaysia, a determined 40-year-old Sebastian decided it was time to “leave the nest”.
“My son took me to McDonald’s in the then Yow Chuan Plaza, where The Intermark is now. McDonald’s was looking for housewives especially, to join their workforce.“Because all my children were already studying in universities, they didn’t want me to feel bored. Two of my sons were studying abroad at that time and wanted me to make friends and live my life as they felt I have done my duty to raise them,” she told Malay Mail Online.
Despite resistance from her husband, Sebastian remained persistent and stepped into the working world. Today, Sebastian prides herself not just on being financially independent but also on being a physically active 74-year-old.
She said although her son drops her off at work daily, she always walks home once she’s done with her shift.
“As long as I am well and good, I can stay independent... walking at my age is good,” the talkative woman said.
Leaving a mark on society
Sebastian said she derives job satisfaction from helping others, offering them an unexpected friendship and imparting invaluable advice on life lessons.
Having worked through the years in a number of different McDonald’s outlets, however, Sebastian said there are times when the regulars she used to serve would lose track of where she’d gone.
But some of the younger ones, especially the students she sometimes counselled, she said, have tracked her down, eager to show her what they’ve made of themselves.
“It’s great satisfaction knowing that you had made such an impact in so many people’s lives simply by extending your friendship and company,” she said.
“Sometimes, all some people need are just encouragement and kind words. These are things money can’t buy.”

Mosquitoes - BEGONE!

My WiSH:
Begone, Mosquitoes. Begone! I hate them. Loathe them with every fibre of my being. I have asked myself on many occasions - what good comes from having mosquitoes in the world? What will happen if they are all gone? Looks like the answer is out. Mosquitoes are meaningless to the world. They are simply harmful, disgusting, revolting, disease-spreading, welt-causing, itch-causing bugs that should just be removed from the face of earth!

Read below:
[Article taken respectfully from sources sited. No copyright of infringement intended.]

What would the world be like without mosquitoes?

It’s summer.  It’s nice out.
Just as you’re starting to really enjoy it, you hear a high, whining, familiar buzz in your ear.
Two things are almost certainly about to happen.  You’re about to be bitten by a small, blood-sucking insect – and you’re about to whack yourself in the side of the head.
Mosquitoes.  Sigh.
Wouldn’t it be nice, we’ve all wondered, if these buzzing, biting, bliss-busting bugs were all just blown to bits?
What would the world be like, if every last mosquito was gone?
“It’s one of those unusual things,” Mike Jenkins, mosquito expert and biological sciences technician for the City of Edmonton, tells Yahoo News.
“Ecologists have taken a look at that a few times, and oddly enough it seems like there might not be an ecological disaster if they were gone.  There’s not really anything – that we know, anyhow – that really depends on them.  There’s no plants that absolutely require a mosquito to pollenate them.  There’s no other species that specifically require mosquitoes to prey on.”
Jenkins notes there are over 3,500 species of mosquitoes worldwide.  And with the notable exceptions of Iceland, Fiji and the Antarctic – they’re everywhere!
Anywhere there’s standing water – even for a short period of time – you’re liable to get bitten.

About the only life forms that could be wiped out if all the mosquitoes vanished?  Dread diseases like malaria, dengue and yellow fever.
“I think probably the largest ecological role mosquitoes have is keeping a number of populations – including possibly humans – in check,” Jenkins says, darkly.  “But we’ve largely overwritten that control anyway.  Even at the risk of overpopulation, we’ve generally gone towards controlling disease, rather than letting it take us out.”
These hated little pests are astonishingly versatile.  They’re efficient and fast enough to breed in bird baths – and also tough enough to endure fierce, persistent droughts.
“In a drought, they go and lay their eggs next to a dried-up pond, and actually let the eggs dry out.  The next time the pond fills up, that activates the eggs.  So even in the worst droughts across the prairies, those mosquito eggs are just sitting there, resting.  And they can sit there for up to a decade.
“We could go through and kill every single mosquito in Canada, and think that we’re completely done.  Ten years later we get a rainstorm, and the mosquitoes are back.”
Jenkins freely admits he respects mosquitoes.  He spends a lot of time with them, and knows their ways and habits well. If there were a button – something he could press, and all the mosquitoes, everywhere on Earth, would be lost and gone forever – would he do it?
“I’m not sure that I would,” he says, with a pause and a bit of a sigh.
“I just think that every time we’ve decided that we know everything about some ecosystem, and we can meddle with it and nothing’s going to happen, it never turns out well.  I imagine that there’s probably something that we don’t understand, that when we hit that button, it will make things terribly go wrong.”

i like being specific! :) is it gingham or plaid?

the difference between plaid and gingham

Style lives in the details and, if you ask us, the correct terminology.

So we thought we'd once and for all clear the confusion around the plaid and gingham patterns.

No, you're not alone in this.

Here's how to tell them apart:
  • Gingham is always is white plus another color
  • Plaid can be any combination of colors
  • The lines in gingham have the same width
  • The lines in plaid have different widths
And there you have it.

Lewis Hamilton's Meaningful Tattoos

Lewis Hamilton explains 'meaningful' tattoos in revealing photoshoot

https://sg.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/fit-to-post-sports/lewis-hamilton-explains--meaningful--tattoos-in-revealing-photoshoot-010251880.html

By  | Fit To Post Sports – 02 April 2015

(Original post on Eurosport) [Please refer to all original sites as stated respectfully. No infringement of copyrights intended.]

REASON WHY I AM SHARING THIS ARTICLE is because it shows the impressive traits that athletes have. I am always in awe of athletes because of their physical prowess and their mental strength. I feel that there is so much to learn from them! :) Here, I am absolutely fascinated by the meanings behind the tattoos that he has on his muscly physique which show his determination and the other things that he values in life! I LIKE.  :)

Lewis Hamilton has opened up about his array of tattoos, explaining the reasoning behind the art which is, as he says, very meaningful.

The two-time F1 world champion was speaking as part of a front-page photoshoot with Men's Health, where he features prominently in the May edition of the health and fitness magazine.

The 30-year-old, who is rarely seen when not in driving overalls, gave his fans a rare glimpse of the tattoos which lie beneath.

Not only that, but he went into great detail about what his body art stands for and what each addition represents.

"I love my ink," Hamilton explained to Men's Health. "They all have a meaning. I'm very strong in my faith, so I wanted to have some religious images.

"I've got Pieta, a Michelangelo sculpture of Mary holding Jesus after he came off the cross, on my shoulder.

"A sacred heart on my arm. Musical notes, because I love music. The compass on my chest is there because church is my compass."Family is everything for me, so I have 'family' written on the top, across my shoulders.

"'Faith', obviously.

"And I have 'powerful beyond measure' written on my chest – it's a short bit I took out of a quote from the writer Marianne Williamson.

"On my back I have the cross and angel wings: rise above it, no matter what life throws at you."

Hamilton went on to talk openly about the physical demands on his body and the amount of training required to compete at the highest level in F1.

"Well, I'm an athlete, but people tend not to see that with F1 drivers," he said.

"I train to quite an intense level because Formula 1 is so physical – the G-forces, the demands on your body. Your heart rate is 150, 160 through the whole race.

"On qualifying lap your heart rate can be up to 180, 190 under tough conditions. Every year you've got to be as light as you can.

"There's a certain weight limit, depending on how heavy the car can be. Last year I had to lose six kilos, I went from 73kg to 67kg. It was hardcore; I didn't have much to lose as it was. So I train a lot."

WOW, is what I say. WOW! :) You rock!

#rememberingmrleekuanyew A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH

            force to be reckoned with

Fig. someone or something that is important andpowerful and must not be ignored.

I wish that I could have seen Mr Lee in his prime years when he was battling it out with the 'bigger and better' countries to establish Singapore as a force to be reckoned with, just like himself.

I love how he asked to be able to say things for himself without having them reworded for him.
I love how he asserted that he was Singaporean and not Chinese. (There is a big difference. IKR!)

His intelligence is mind-blowing. He single-handedly tackled the various questions confidently and cleverly.

#rememberingmrleekuanyew Thank You from the Bottom of My Heart

Mr Lee Kuan Yew is Singapore. Mr Lee Kuan Yew is the Heart of Singapore. Now that this heart has stopped beating, Singapore will never be the same again.

I write this as the 'grandchild' of Mr Lee. As one of the kids from Gen X, Mr Lee was like a revered grandfather. I knew about his existence, of course, and knew about how remarkable a man he was. The adults would talk about him and share stories about him and his contributions. The benefits of being the 'grandchild' are that I am enjoying the fruits of his labour and the reaping what he has sown for all Singaporeans.

Without Mr Lee, I will (likely) not be bilingual and be at the losing end. Sure, I grumbled at school and whined sometimes about coping with more than one language but it was 'his insistence' that I took two languages and so, I did. Well, 'grandpa' knows best, isn't it? Now, English, for me, is my working language, literally. Without English, where would I be? What would I do? That's food for thought.

English is a working language, a business language. Due to his amazing foresight, many Singaporeans are able to compete on an international level and platform. A video that I watched recently showed interviewers asking Koreans and Japanese why they were not confident at using English despite studying the language for many years in school. I'll leave this video for those interested to watch but my point is that Mr Lee's Bilingual Policy has helped us so much. Gen X and Gen Y have truly benefited from learning two languages from young.

His contributions towards Singapore cannot be summed up like a 150-word summary. He has dedicated his whole life to Singapore and as the 'grandchild' of Mr Lee, even a heart-felt gratitude is not enough. Despite the immense and painful loss, I feel that we have to embody his pragmatism and push forward to make our Singapore, the Singapore that he will be proud of, always. We cannot and should not let him down because he has given his whole life to building a successful Singapore. The least that we can do as 'surviving members of the SG family' is that we ensure that Singapore remains successful and better yet, make Singapore even more successful.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This has to be translated to Chinese for the effects to be felt but here goes...
Others: You think you very up there and all that is it? Who's your 'grandfather', eh?
SG Gen X: Mr Lee Kuan Yew.
Others: Oh... You win, okay? You win.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Mr Lee, for being someone whom we can boast about. Because of you, your 'children', 'grandchildren', 'great-grandchildren'... can hold their heads up high and say, "Yes, we are Singaporeans and Singapore is our homeland which is where we belong."

Dear Mr Lee,
You are deeply missed. You are forever revered and respected. Thank you, thank you so so so much for building up Singapore.

Mutual Respect regardless of Race, Religion, Sex and so on. Come On, it's 2015!

What a Sassy Lady and I Salute Her!

I salute television host, Rima Karaki, for staying calm, assertive and

polite enough in the face of sexism and outright rudeness. She has

turned the tables and has shown what a misogynist bigot this 'respected'

Sheikh is.

Confrontation is very stressful for me and I loathe facing such

unpleasant and potentially explosive situations. Karaki has taught me

that it is necessary to love myself and hold my good self in such high

regard that any slights against me should not be taken lying down.

There is a need to be firm when people are out to trample you and call

you terrible names.

Additionally, I'd like to add: #comebackto2015,

#stoplivinginyourownbubble,

#respectpeopleregardlessofsex,

#mutualrespectandcommoncourtesyplease,

#thinkbeforeyouspeakorelseyouaregoingtoshootyourselfinthemouth. This

bigot has got some serious growing up to do. Stop living in your own

ancient world and narrow mind. Seriously, give the person whom you are

talking to due respect. There is no need to resort to below the belt and

childish means like calling another person horrible names. Such uncouth

behaviour reflects extremely badly on him. He disgusts me through and

through.

Respect the PERSON regardless of sex/gender. Celebrate the

PERSON's uniqueness and abilities regardless of sex/gender. Come on,

we are more than our physical attributes, are we not? Man or Woman.

Boy or Girl. We are Human Beings. Let us see the Person and not

judge just based on sex/gender.

Dear Rima,

Thank you for speaking up! Thank you for keeping cool and calm in a

situation that was possibly frightening and anxiety-inducing. You have

taught as that there is no need to back down in the face of bigots. Let's

hope that things change for the better and that this so-called respected

Sheikh learns the error of his ways and that he releases his prejudiced

notions and welcomes ideas like mutual respect despite differences and

thinking before he speaks. You Rock!

Sincerely,

The BRAINS behind The Bubbling Brain

TV host shuts down rude guest on live television

A television host in Lebanon got the last word while interviewing an outspoken guest. When Rima Karaki from the news station Al Jadeed spoke to London-based Sheikh Hani Al Sibai, the discussion was meant to cover reports that Christians are joining IS. Al Sibai appears to be avoiding the question at first, instead giving a long history lesson on the matter. Then a frustrated Karaki asks Al Sibai to stick to the discussion topic, reminding him of their time constraints: “For your own benefit, I’m telling you that we are running out of time.” Al Sibai shoots back, “Are you done? Shut up so I can talk.”

The video of the interview was posted to YouTube, where it has been viewed more than 2.8 million times. Karaki is also getting support from social media, with tweets calling her “courageous” and a “boss.”
